TEACHING
Teaching Philosophy:
I prefer designing lessons around the needs and interests of the individual. That being said, all of my students learn the basics in reading, theory, and technique. I’m happy to help students with their school band work or preparing for auditions and conservatory exams. As students progress they can learn to play along with their favourite songs and focus on specific genres.
Each student has their own interest and commitment level with the instrument, and I’m happy to adjust accordingly. The study of drumming can be a wonderful challenge, helping students develop discipline and confidence, and it should also be fun.
I’ve also worked with new professionals, helping them develop the tools they need for their burgeoning careers. This can be very rewarding as we have the opportunity for developing functional concepts in professional work and recording.
Over the years I’ve enjoyed working with quite a few students on the spectrum (ASD), and have found that with each mind there is a unique way of learning.
STARTER Equipment:
The minimum equipment requirement for the initial stages of drum lessons are a practice pad and drum sticks. A lot can be learned with this simple set-up. Many students have electronic drums, which are great for households who don’t want the loud sounds of an acoustic drum set. You can rent both electronic and acoustic drums from a few stores in the Greater Vancouver area (feel free to contact me for further details).
I provide written material, hand outs, and will also recommend a few books.
